Speed Cameras the first Litmus test for the Baillieu Government

The Department of Justice says on its website that cameras "are located on our most dangerous roads and intersections to prevent speed and red-light offences".

Hahaha , theres a good one hey ! and we all believe that - not. We dont believe a word of it . We KNOW its about the revenue . We Know its a thieving government TAX no matter what they call it or how they justify it.

The Herald Sun , and all praise it for getting stuck into this issue says -

VICTORIANS should be outraged by today's revelations in the Herald Sun that only three of the state's 20 most dangerous accident black spots are monitored by speed cameras.

but really , who in Victoria didn't know that. Politicicians have been throwing the "its about safety" lie at us for years though in recent times they have ramped up the lying , and we - the "she'll be right mate Australian voters , have let them LIE to us without calling them on it.

The problem is LYING. Its bloody rampant now.

A former VicRoads safety official said the result was no surprise.

"Speed cameras are placed in locations with very high levels of traffic flow and where there is an increased chance of fining people," engineer John Lambert said.

Mr Lambert said there was no evidence that accident locations had been analysed before placing cameras. "The rationale for them choosing those sites would be very interesting to know," he said.

We can guess though cant we , given the four eastlink cameras rip money of us and there are no serious accidents at any of them.

So will the Herald Suns revelations about this change anything ? I'm betting things will change - they will keep their TAX collection cameras of course and reap the rewards , and the outcome of the Herald Suns investigations will probably be more cameras covering the black spots ( just to shut up the HUN ) , and to make it all worse they have 32 more cameras they are going to turn on for fine collection.

We'll have to wait and see just how the Baillieu government will deal with all this , and see whether they LIE like the last government we had . They have held back for now turning those extra 32 cameras on , so we wait to see whether they have any honour and Truth about them -

THE introduction of new speed cameras has been halted by the new State Government.

The Herald Sun revealed on Wednesday that 32 new cameras were ready to be switched on, but Police Minister Peter Ryan has ordered the Department of Justice not to activate them.

Thats a good start for sure but lets not forget that the revenue from the other revenue raising cameras is still in full swing , so we will see soon whether this new government is one of integrity and Honour , or just another bunch of Liars - and dont forget , they spent years in opposition beratting the Labor government over using speed cameras as revenue raises . Will their song change now they have their hands on the cash , or will they actually do something constructive ?

Years of the previous LIARS have left me cynical about it........ lets see .....

On the news last night they

On the news last night they showed the road toll for the xmas period so far. Victoria is way ahead, in fact I think we may have more than the other states combined. How can this be seeing as we have more 'safety cameras' than the other states combined? The silence is deafening. As long as the states coffers are being filled, nothing wiil change.

That's not quite right

That's not quite right unfortunately. I think we'll be in a situation of we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

If they follow the previous govt's trend they'll say we haven't got the message so more cameras and radars are needed. More police covert sneakiness, reduce all the speed limits blah blah.

If we have the least deaths on the road they'll claim victory and say the current model is working.

So basically WE'RE FUCKED!

The speed camera TAX

Only if we all do nothing about it in the great Australian tradition, but it will be our own doing if we are , as you put it - Fucked. We have this government on record as saying its revenue raising. The NSW opposition - and they will be government soon , have gone further and claimed that the Labor party use speed camera fines to keep their budget in surplus ( DUH ! ) .

Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner said the $137m in extra revenue represented nearly 20 per cent of the planned surplus the Labor government expected to return for 2010-11 and was a blatant revenue-raising tactic. "This means the state's fiscal position now relies on more motorists speeding on our roads," Mr Stoner said. "Speed cameras should be there to deter motorists from driving dangerously, not to raise revenue."

Every state is the same . All Australians KNOW this is a tax and has nothing to do with Safety or saving lives. All of the Murdock papers seem to be taking this issue on now right across Australia. So we just have to get organised , and I mean at grass roots level. Car clubs , Bike clubs , truck clubs .

A protest ride where we stop the city , one organised well ahead and planned properly . Cars , Trucks and bikes and we stop the city . Time to stop these LIARS before their lying fatally infects our society irreparably. Lying bastards they are.

Maybe we should have citisen fines for every Lie these lying politicians utter.

A website of shame maybe - where we publish their lies.

All your commenst have now convinced me.

The cameras are placed in non critical manet raining spots.

I say place cameras in black spots only, remove all fines from speeders caught on camera, but increase the point penalty.

If the agrument is purely about taxes by penalty, then this should be supported. :yahoo:

However, the question is much more complicated.

The current speed limits are too low in many instances and bear no relationship with road and traffic conditions. Where we have autobahn conditions the limit should be high. Where traffic flows are low on freeways such as Monash (non-peak) why is there still an 80kph limit until Darling? Why on Hoddle St./Punt Rd. coming from the north the is 70 kph. There are plenty of times this can be achieved, despite the reputation. However, for 50m before Bridge Rd it is 60kph, then back to 70 once over Bridge?

Except where there are uncontrolled intersections and possible pedestrians moving on to the road, speed alone is not a significant problem.

Speed, as the culprit, is too simplistic and speeding fines are no deterent at all.

If the law is wrong then the law should be changed. ;)

But why are they black spots? Perhaps they should fix those and stop creating new ones.

There are bullshit speed limits everywhere but also dickheads as well. We've just got back from up north and on the way we saw a car in a paddock on it's roof just coming out of Wang on a fairly straight bit of road. WTF!

What are the answers?
