I always new Ballarat had a perpose in life and worth a visit just to see this plaque.
I have read Phil Irving's Autobiography and it is an exellent book with plenty of Australian motorcycling history, including the AJS shop in Ballarat
To Go and See This plaque, Its a peace of Our Australian Nation Motorcylcing History.
If you still have this book Tomcat ( the one you lent me ) hang on to it. It sells in Amazon right now for $3000. Not kidding. Its worth a pretty penny. I went to try and get a digital copy but no luck. Cant afford to get the hard copy
Really good read here of a Rapide first offered for sale for 40 pounds. Beautiful bike.
A mate in the Beeza club said "If you like a good book read this", after I read it I bought my own copy ($90) from Wheels of Time when they still had their shop in Dande. They now do mail or online sales http://www.wheelsoftime.com.au/gallery/Motorcycle%2B-%2BBSA?view=list&order=name but I couldn't find it on their WWW store. Could be out of print?? FYI my copy is not for sale!
Pity we cant get that book , because some dates are a bit weird and stories on the web vary a lot. For Instance young Phil bought the HRD shop of Davies after he left Cambridge in 1928. But that placque has the dates 1926 - 1929. Weird. His autobiography would clear things up.
Phil Vincent bought out HRD in 1928.
Phil Irving was at Granter and Irving Motorcycles (Ballarat) at that time
SIGH. shouldn't be doing this on day after new years hey
