More Revenue Raising ?

Zero alcohol limit for Queensland motorcyclists?

words - Guy Allen
Proposal is currently being debated

A zero alcohol limit for Queensland's motorcyclists is currently being debated, as a response to that state's less than impressive road toll stats for 2009.

The overall fatality numbers are up around five per cent over the previous year, with motorcycle stats showing a rise over the last five years.

The Courier Mail newspaper reports: "Queensland Transport is investigating the benefits of a zero alcohol limit as part of its four-year motorcycle safety strategy, along with new technology to prevent bikes escaping speed camera detection.

"Radio Frequency Identification Devices are being developed to help overcome the problem of motorbikes not having a front registration plate by allowing bikes to be identified through other means," the report continues.

The whole frontal ID issue for bikes has been raised numerous times over recent years, with attempts to agree on a standard front plate having so far failed.

More worrying was this quote, also from the Courier Mail: "Make it zero tolerance on the road everywhere," Terry Walker of the United Motorcycle Council of Queensland said. "But certainly we'd support a zero limit for bikers because you need to be as alert as possible when riding," he added.

My thoughts.

I am pretty sure Pilots, Bus, Plant Operators on construction sites, Train and Taxi Drivers need to be alcohol free. L and P platers plus Truck Drivers have to be Zero Alcohol.

The common thread I see here is that all of the above have the potential to kill quite a number of innocent people if grog is involved. Why then are Cars and Vans and 4wd vehicles exempt from this law... They are 5m by 3m and weigh over a Tonne, some much larger and heavier. They often have Giant Bull Bars attached, illegally I believe. Bicycle racks with sharp metal bits sticking out everywhere without bicycles attached, also illegal..

I have little doubt that if a motorcycle crashes statistics will prove that few people other than the Rider and Pillion will suffer. Yet cars can carry 5 or more, and due to their size and weight the damage to other vehicles and property is way more than any bike.

Motorcycles are over represented in fatalaties in accordence with their % of road users. Well I don't think having a beer with lunch has caused that. Who do they think they are fooling ! How much revenue are they going to raise if 30 - 60 odd bikes turn up at some pub for lunch, and an RBT is set up in the direction of their departure. Hell, the Cops only need to read forums to find out where the bigger clubs are having lunch and read which way they will go after !

The Govt. has no interest in Road Safety, they treat the general public as Cash Cows and use the Police as Milking Maids. Oh , and while they are there they will also book us all for associating with each other.
