Could this bizzare practice have come from the South ?

I have noticed for the last couple of years that Motorists in Brisbane are leaving up to a car length between themselves and the vehicle in front of them when stopped in traffic.   I have made some enquiries and the best answer is that they are leaving room in case they get Rear Ended.   Apparently this practice will avoid the car in front being hit as well.   People even leave a full car space when boxed in and can't get around the vehicle in front anyway.

But I still see them taking up Twice as much room as they need to, when they have 20 odd cars stopped behind them.   Hardly likely to be Rear Ended then !   Imagine if everybody did this , traffic jams would be Twice as long as they are now.   One person in a Huge 4wd is bad enough but now they occupy a huge vacant space as well.

What's more is that if they spot a bike looming close they roll forward closing the gap they have made, they  seem to be less concerned about being Rear Ended then, and more about a MotorCycle getting into THEIR spot ...

So can someone enlighten me on this, does it happen in other cities, are Driving Instructors teaching  people to do this?   Is it just to feed Drivers pathetic ego's having  more space than the next guy or what !

No Really , if you keep more space than is neccessary , please tell me the reason why, 'cause I just don't get it.
